The Institute for the Medical Humanities (IMH) at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, with rank negotiable based on experience.  The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary faculty in ethics, philosophy, history, law, policy, literature, religious studies, and visual studies who engage in research and teaching of medical students, trainees, and graduate students in the medical humanities as well as in the biomedical sciences.  The IMH also offers an ethics consultation service in the university’s hospitals.  The IMH is home of the nation’s only Ph.D. program in medical humanities.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in a humanities discipline or in the medical humanities. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to teach as well as a publication record commensurate with years of experience.   A background in religious studies and ethics, potential to secure external grant funding, and the ability to engage in clinical ethics consultation are all highly desirable. Job Summary:

Qualifications:
BA/BS, with specialized knowledge of bioethics issues/topics.  Five years of experience in support of a senior executive or senior university leader, providing high level administrative oversight, coordination, and advice (additional education can substitute for experience).  Works well under pressure and meets deadlines; able to synthesize, analyze, critique; self starter, creative/imaginative; excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to address/resolve difficult and multi-faceted problems; ability to work independently with authority and minimal supervision; ability to maintain confidences and discreet, tactful behavior at all times; ability to develop and maintain sound professional relationships among superiors, subordinates and peers; ability to respond to unanticipated needs and last minute changes in priority.

Preferred Qualifications:
MA in bioethics (or bioethics related field) preferred, but not required.

Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics Invites Applications for an Administrative Coordinator    

General Description:
The Administrative Coordinator will provide administrative support and research assistance for the office of the Director of the Berman Institute, including:  managing the Director’s calendar; research and analysis for scholarly articles, grant/contract proposals, presentations, and projects; and general administrative support and records control.  May perform duties of a sensitive and confidential nature.

Responsibilities:
• Provide research support for academic and policy-oriented inquiries. Perform literature searches for scholarly/news/scientific material and perform electronic database searches using sources such as Lexis/Nexis, PubMed, and others. Synthesize, evaluate, and triage material. Prepare drafts for projects, grants, presentations, and papers as time permits.
•  Manage conflict-free calendar of meetings and appointments for the Director.  Exercise a high level of independent judgment in prioritizing requests for time on the Director’s calendar and in resolving scheduling conflicts.
•  Independently triage telephone calls, mail, faxes, and electronic and voice mail with good judgment and in an efficient and organized manner.
•  Monitor and process reimbursements, online payments, and other expenditures.
•  Provide interface with department, school, and university offices on behalf of the Director’s office and independently anticipate issues to ensure efficient service and operations. Effectively communicate with academic and administrative leaders, faculty, students, applicants, guests, and other staff.
•  Design and produce materials/ reports/grants as required, using various software including Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint.  Must use independent initiative in using computer programs in an interactive and efficient manner to ensure accuracy and efficient use of time and technology.
•  Coordinate meetings and special events; handle contracts, travel arrangements, catering, room reservations, advertising/publicity, A/V support and other aspects as needed.
•  Create and independently manage tickler files and follow up activities and tasks on a daily basis.
•  Tailor travel itineraries (transportation, lodging, etc.) to the Director’s preferences and to provide the most efficient use of the Director’s time.
•  Design and maintain administrative filing system; maintain records through filing, retrieval, storage, coding, updating, and destruction.
•  Maintain office equipment and back up data.
•  Assist in preparation of grant applications/renewals and IRB applications.
•  Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
HS Diploma/GED required.  Bachelor’s degree preferred.  Three year’s relevant office/administrative experience (additional education may be substituted for years of experience). The successful incumbent must have excellent writing, editorial and verbal communication skills: library and online research skills; ability to take initiative and exercise independent judgment to resolve administrative problems; excellent organizational skills with attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team; strong computer literacy skills and ability to learn new software; ability to work in a dynamic, fast paced environment and respond quickly to changing priorities; ability to interact in a helpful, friendly, and professional manner with students, staff, faculty, deans, scholars, and all others encountered during the course of business.

California Pacific Medical Center Program in Medicine & Human Values
June 1, 2008 to August 31, 2008: 20 hrs per week.
 
POSITION PURPOSE: To gain exposure to the field of bioethics by assisting faculty and staff in day-to-day general program activities.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Research support.  Organizing and filing journal articles.  Conduct literature searches and collect general information on assigned research topics.  Attend weekly research rounds in the ICU.
* Administrative support.  Provide general administrative support including but not limited to answering phone (Ethics Hotline), making phone calls, sending faxes, filing, mail handling, photocopying, and lecture preparation assistance.
* Clinical: Assist with Ethics Committee preparation work, including meeting agendas and journal club.
* Other duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
* BA/BS in Bioethics/Philosophy/Applied Ethics or Bachelor level student (Jr/Sr) with courses completed in Bioethics. 
* Ability to juggle multiple tasks.  Strong communication skills.  Detail oriented.
* Medline fluent, as well as knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Novel Tech Ethics

Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Associate in Neuroethics

This is a 2-year position, within a four-year CIHR-funded grant Therapeutic Hopes and Ethical Concerns: Clinical Research in the Neurosciences. The PDF/RA will report to Principal Investigator Françoise Baylis at Novel Tech Ethics, Dalhousie University.

This research project critically examines a number of ethical issues for prospective or actual clinical trials involving gene transfer and stem cell transplantation for neurological conditions.  The PDF/RA will work on one or more of the following sub-projects:
1. Ethical dimensions of preclinical assessment in novel therapeutics, neurological interventions, and surgical innovation;
2. Ethical research design for neurological clinical studies involving gene transfer and stem cell transplantation; and
3. The potential impact of gene transfer and stem cell interventions in the brain on issues of personal identity.

The PDF is expected to publish his/her research in relevant peer-reviewed journals and to present his/her research at national and international meetings.
We invite applications from candidates who have a background in bioethics, research ethics, philosophy of mind, or philosophy, history and social studies of science, and who have completed a degree at the PhD level.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine invites applications for the Sirridge Professorship in Medical Humanities. The Sirridge Professorship in Medical Humanities is an Endowed Professorship intended to be filled by an outstanding and active clinician with a strong interest and background in the medical humanities and student education.  The primary appointment is to the clinical department, with at least a 0.5 FTE humanities commitment to and close collaboration with the Director of the Sirridge Office of Medical Humanities in developing and delivering its curriculum to our students. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this Endowed Professorship must be active clinicians with a doctoral degree, and are expected to qualify for the Associate Professor or Professor rank at UMKC. Ideal candidates will be outstanding clinicians who demonstrate excellence in medical education, and have a solid publication record in the medical humanities. In particular, a focus on narrative expression, e.g. description of personal experiences of the patient or clinician, will be regarded favorably.
