Sciences/Humanities

Lehigh University announces the establishment of a Presidential Chair in Health in the social sciences or humanities. The holder of the Presidential Chair will be a dynamic scholar and teacher committed to advancing research in his or her field while acting as a catalyst to expand Lehigh’s new, university-wide Health Initiative. BIOETHICS PROGRAM MANAGER
STANFORD UNIVERSITY
2010-2012 POSITION


Description: The primary purpose of the Program Manager position is to coordinate the research, administrative, and event activities of the Center for Integration of Research on Genetics and Ethics (CIRGE) located within the larger Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics (SCBE). CIRGE is one of six Centers of Excellence funded by the National Institutes of Health that study the ethical, legal and social implications of genetic research. The CIRGE Program Manager is an integral part of Center operations, helping to ensure that the upcoming years of CIRGE are as successful as those of the first five-year period. The Program Manager reports directly to the CIRGE Principal Investigator and works closely with most other SCBE faculty. A two-year commitment is necessary for this position, beginning in June 2010. The salary is based on University guidelines and will be commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities: The Program Manager provides research and administrative support for CIRGE. Overall, the Program Manager’s time will be approximately equally split between research duties and administrative responsibilities. Research duties include performing literature searches, acquiring research data, analyzing research data and conducting other research tasks as needed. There is also ample opportunity to participate in the writing of journal articles and research proposals as well as in the presenting of research findings at national conferences. Administrative responsibilities include scheduling and anticipating in regular Center meetings as well as organizing and publicizing CIRGE events, including the monthly Journal Club, frequent speaker seminars and annual large conferences. Administrative duties also include regularly updating the CIRGE website, coordinating CIRGE server maintenance and updates, managing and orecasting the CIRGE budget, assisting with the hiring of research assistants and postdoctoral and postbaccalaureate fellows as appropriate, and generally ensuring that Center operations run smoothly. The CIRGE Principal Investigator may also delegate additional duties as needed.

Qualifications: Applicants for this position must have, or earn by the time of employment, a four-year college degree (or equivalent) in biology, human biology, psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, genetics or a related science field. Applicants must also have one year of research experience working in a fast-paced environment in one of the following fields: biomedical ethics, biomedical science, or social science. BIOETHICS POSTBACCALAUREATE FELLOW

Description: The Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics (SCBE) invites applications for two postbaccalaureate training fellowships beginning in July 2010 at the Center for Integration of Research on Genetics and Ethics (CIRGE), a Center of Excellence in ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications) Research funded by the National Institutes of Health. CIRGE seeks candidates from a variety of backgrounds, especially 1) biomedical or biological research, or 2)

Responsibilities: Fellows will conduct independent ELSI research in issues around behavioral genetics. They will have a range of additional opportunities, including participating in CIRGE intellectual life (an interdisciplinary community of scholars including geneticists/scientists, ethicists, lawyers, and physicians); taking coursework in genetics, ethics, or ELSI research methods; being involved in a research ethics consultation service for bioscientists; and helping to plan and participate in CIRGE symposia, policy workshops, and other events and programs aimed at forging interdisciplinary dialogue with genetics researchers.

Short Description:  The fellowship aims at expanding the clinical experience of those with prior academic training in bioethics interested in providing clinical ethics consultation services. Clinical ethics training focuses on building an advanced skill set toward meeting the core competencies for the provision of clinical ethics consultation as endorsed by the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities.

Position Description:  The Alden March Bioethics Institute—previously called the Center For Medical Ethics, Education and Research—at Albany Medical College was founded in 1993 by John Balint, M.D., to provide medical ethics education, develop an ethics consultation service, and promote high quality and useful research and scholarly works on important ethical issues in health care. The Center’s programs include required coursework in medical ethics for Albany Medical College students, an on-site and on-line master’s program in bioethics, and a Scholar’s Program in Bioethics for medical students. AMBI operates a full-time ethics consultation service at Albany Medical Center Hospital for physicians, nurses and other patient caregivers, patients and their families. Responsibilities:  Respond to ethics consultation requests, coordinating coverage with other hospital clinical ethicists, members of the ethics committee, mission leaders, or pastoral care staff as appropriate; Provide clinical ethics consultation services under supervision to patients, family members, staff, and physicians in a variety of clinical and organizational settings; Apply one’s knowledge and skills in assessment of ethical needs and interventions, including communication, mediation and problem solving; Help coordinate hospital ethics committee functions and educational activities; Make rounds in various clinical areas, such as adult medical and surgical, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care units, women's health units, and general medical and surgical areas; Attend meetings, such as the hospital ethics committee, institutional review board, select quality assurance committees, and interdisciplinary clinical teams; Coordinate and offer ethics education programs, grand rounds, and ethics lectures and seminars in the medical center and to area institutions as requested; Attend clinical ethics educational offerings throughout the system; and Participate in data collection and quality improvement activities as well as regulatory preparedness activities related to clinical ethics consultation and educational services.

Supervision and Colleagues:  The Clinical Ethics Fellow works closely with other clinical ethicists who provide clinical ethics consultation services, faculty within the Institute, and center leaders to develop personalized learning goals and strategies for accomplishing them. Additional collegial support comes from a wide range of experienced clinicians, including physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, and administrators. The Alden March Bioethics Institute includes core teaching faculty from the medical school and medical center as well as colleagues from Albany Law School, the State University of New York at Albany, the New York State Department of Health, Northeast Health, the College of St. Rose, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and other local and national educational and health care institutions.

Educational Requirements:  The successful applicant must hold at least a master’s degree in bioethics (or its equivalent) and a professional or graduate degree in a discipline that interfaces with bioethics (such as law, medicine, nursing, social work, philosophy, theology, or moral theology). A candidate with direct course work or extensive practical experience in bioethics or health care is prerequisite.

Prior Experience:  Experience in applied ethics, preferably in a health care setting with experience in consultation, teaching or policy development is preferred — required if a candidate lacks a terminal degree.
 
Licensure/Certification/Registration:  None is required. Clinicians or other licensed or registered applicants should consider their need to maintain licenses or other certifications while engaged in the fellowship.

Complexity of the Work Environment:  The Clinical Ethics Fellow must be a critical thinker and have very good written and oral communication, relational, and educational skills. The Clinical Ethics Fellow must be able to follow hospital, departmental and related policies and procedures, and work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, emotionally charged atmosphere.

Salary and Benefits:  The full-time annual salary for this training position is $42,500 and carries full-time benefits with three weeks earned time off.

The overarching goal of the Bioethics Initiative for Equity in Health Care and Research is to develop a diverse, multidisciplinary workforce capable of the translation of research findings into evidence-based policies and practices for improving health care and research equity among racial and ethnic populations in Texas, and in keeping with the overall mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, the nation and the world. This tract is designed to become a long-standing program of M. D. Anderson's Section for Integrated Ethics in Cancer Care.

The project aims to:
to develop the Bioethics Initiative for Equity in Health Care and Research tract, dedicated to the training of individuals from historically racial or ethnic minorities in bioethics to address the under-representation of minorities in clinical trials,
to increase the number of and to advance women and historically underrepresented ethnic and racial individuals to the bioethics academic enterprise, and
to develop and use non-traditional methods to build trust in the health care system to increase racial and ethnic participation in clinical trials.

The project is a joint effort between researchers in The University of Texas M.D. Anderson's Center for Research on Minority Health, the nation's only congressionally mandated center for the study of Health Disparities, and M. D. Anderson's Section for Integrated Ethics in Cancer Care.

Bioethics Initiative for Equity in Health Care and Research at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center

SUMMER INTERNSHIP
CALL FOR APPLICANTS

The overarching goal of the Bioethics Initiative for Equity in Health Care and Research is to develop a diverse, multidisciplinary workforce capable of the translation of research findings into evidence-based policies and practices for improving health care and research equity among racial and ethnic populations in Texas, and in keeping with the overall mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, the nation and the world. This tract is designed to become a long-standing program of M. D. Anderson's Section for Integrated Ethics in Cancer Care.

The project aims to:
to develop the Bioethics Initiative for Equity in Health Care and Research tract, dedicated to the training of individuals from historically racial or ethnic minorities in bioethics to address the under-representation of minorities in clinical trials,
to increase the number of and to advance women and historically underrepresented ethnic and racial individuals to the bioethics academic enterprise, and
to develop and use non-traditional methods to build trust in the health care system to increase racial and ethnic participation in clinical trials.

The project is a joint effort between researchers in The University of Texas M.D. Anderson's Center for Research on Minority Health, the nation's only congressionally mandated center for the study of Health Disparities, and M. D. Anderson's Section for Integrated Ethics in Cancer Care.

Fellowship Selection Criteria:
Training in a discipline compatible with basic, clinical, behavioral research, or health care ethics.
Potential contribution to the diversity of the Bioethics Initiative for Equity in Health Care and Research tract.
Completion of a degree compatible with the goals of the Bioethics Initiative for Equity in Health Care and Research from an accredited Institution. (Minimum of a Bachelor's degree, Master level training and professional experience preferred).
Fit with the research program of the Bioethics Initiative for Equity in Health Care and Research.
Previous clinical and/or clinical research experience (abstracts, publications, awards).
Expressed interest in a career in multidisciplinary clinical research or Health Care Ethics.
Interest is studying health differences and disparities or health in historically underserved populations.

Fellowship Site:
The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas with rotations at various institutions throughout the Texas Medical Center.

Research Assistant

The Center's two Research Assistants provide research support for Center projects and professional staff. This includes journal screening, literature and web-based searches, document retrieval, and preparation of detailed summaries of research project meetings. The Research Assistants also provide some administrative support to the research department and bibliographic and other services for Center publications, including the Center's website and Bioethics Forum. Bioethics Research Project Specialist

Description:

The Bioethics Research Project Specialist (BRPS) will assume responsibility for ensuring the successful conduct of a comparative effectiveness and quality improvement project for the Berman Institute of Bioethics.  The BRPS will work with the principal investigators of the project to:   produce a clear, conceptual analysis that defines and characterizes the constitutive elements of "research" and "treatment" through the development of rich case studies; examine the implications of this conceptual analysis for  moral and policy purposes; conduct empirical research in the areas of  a) clinical trials of unapproved drugs and devices; (b) comparative effectiveness research; and (c) quality improvement research; and based on the conceptual, moral, and empirical findings, develop policy guidance and safeguards for research participants in the three areas above.  The position will have responsibility for all facets of research activities, data management, and regulatory activities for the project. S/he will perform primary research for project aims; analyze and synthesize data; generate progress reports; develop interview guide; draft case studies; draft and contribute original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis to manuscripts and white papers ; manage general project administration; handle focus group logistics and project related meetings; and ensure smooth communications among Core Group members.

Qualifications:

BA in related discipline.  Graduate degree preferred.  Three years related experience (advanced education may substitute for some experience). Candidate must have:  familiarity with bioethics issues; excellent written & verbal skills; organizational skills; ability to complete work independently; library & online research skills; and computer skills, including familiarity with word processing, data software, and research tools. Experience in public health research preferred. Individual must be able to exercise judgment, quickly assess issues, and recommend responsive solutions.
