Hiring and Recruitment Guidelines Policy

Effective Date: July 21, 2005
Revised: October 19, 2005

Purpose: The following guidelines were adopted by the ASBH Board of Directors and should be used by potential employers who include job opening listings on the ASBH broadcast email, on the job board at the annual conference, and any other ASBH medium.

Guidelines: Employers and job applicants have ethical responsibilities to each other. Recruitment and employment within bioethics and the medical humanities should conform with principles of justice and honesty.

  1. In hiring and employment there should be no discrimination based on irrelevant characteristics such as age, disability, color, ethnicity, sex, or sexual orientation.
  2. Applicants should fairly and honestly represent themselves and their interest in the position, and institutions should represent the availability of the position fairly and accurately.
  3. Employers should promptly communicate the receipt of applications, the decision making time-frame, and the disposition of each application. Applicants should promptly communicate a decision to withdraw an application.
